Sample outline for Cromwell Essay; or use the Thinking Map

Oliver Cromwell Essay 2014:  Hero or Tyrant?

For this essay you will be using your notes, the text, and the biographical handout to
Determine whether Cromwell was more of a Hero or a Tyrant.
PROMPT: 

Oliver Cromwell became a hero when led the English Civil War against King Charles.  After beheading the King, he became leader of Parliament.  As leader of Parliament he created laws about religion, daily behavior and ‘merryment’, and he purged the Parliament.  In your opinion, was he more of a hero or a tyrant?  Did he do more harm than good?  Use the handout first to develop an outline; then add information from your notes or the text. 
Planning; outlining
With a team you will list the criterion that support , or counter your thesis (Hero or Tyrant).  You will use your text, notes, important dates, And handout. We will develop a Thinking Map together in class to help organize your essay.  REMEMBER WHEN YOU WRITE TO HAVE UNITY in your paragraphs.

Key essay components:
Introductory paragraph.  This should include the historical background of the English Civil War, date,references to Charles I and Oliver Cromwell as a leaders, and your thesis statement.  You can also add a quote or a dramatic moment as a ‘grabber’.

A.  Sample outline/Body paragraphs:
Remember:  As you tell Cromwell’s story, you want to emphasize events (and their dates) that support your thesis.  This is your Evidence to support your thesis.


1. Identify the causes of the English Civil War.  Include references to the actions of King Charles I.
2. Describe Oliver Cromwell’s involvement in the Civil War.  Include  religious and political beliefs, and military leadership in this civil war.
3. Cromwell is victorious over the King.  Charles1 is captured.  Cromwell encourages the Parliament to Behead the King.  The new Parliament---is a Commonwealth without a King
4. Describe why and how (purges Parliament) Cromwell  becomes ‘lord protectorate’
5. List the actions of Cromwell as ‘lord protectorate’.
Conclusion:  Highlight one or two most important examples that support your thesis.
You can also make reference to future limits on the King’s power after he dies.

Use MLA Format:  1 inch margins; 12 pitch Time New roman font; double space; headings; your own original title; indent paragraphs 5 spaces

You will type your first draft on Thursday night.  (no paper = -20)  You will bring it to class on Friday for my review and to share with classmates.  The Final Draft is due Monday in class.  No late papers accepted.
